What is Endometrial Ablation?
Premenopausal women who experience heavy periods due to benign causes may choose to undergo a uterine ablation if they do not wish to become pregnant. Because endometrial ablation destroys the lining of the uterus, menstruation ceases but the hormonal cycle is not disrupted since the procedure does not involve the ovaries or fallopian tubes.
The short, single-treatment procedure is free from hormones and is 72% effective in preventing future bleeding. It is done in an office setting with local and IV anesthesia, and patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
